Corridor Monitoring at Carvin’s Cove

Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club Meetup Group
Description:
A section of corridor interior to Carvin’s Cove contains twelve survey monuments that have not been maintained since 2019. Monitoring this section of corridor will support the ATC’s effort to keep the trail corridor as up-to-date as possible to protect the trail!

Monitors use a map and compass to navigate to survey monuments, where they will document conditions and provide maintenance by painting trees and hanging signs on the boundary line.

This posting is for beginner and advanced corridor monitors alike. Please be prepared with clothing that is appropriate for hiking off trail, for inclement weather, and for painting. Also be prepared with food and water for the day. Work equipment will be provided.

Location:
The Bennet Springs Parking Lot (4300 Carvins Cove Road, Salem, VA 24153)
Plan to carpool to the Sawmill Branch Trail. It is 1.17 miles from the Sawmill Branch Trail to the AT. We will turn onto the boundary line where it crosse the Sawmill Branch Trail and follow the corridor southeast.
