Saw Tooth Ridge to Dragons Tooth
This is a strenuous 10.3 mile hike with 3525 feet of elevation gain. The trail head is about 6 miles from Roanoke and a short 6 mile car shuttle will be required. A $1.00 carpool fee is to be paid to the driver.
We will start the hike at the McAfee Knob parking area on Route 311. But instead of going to McAfee Knob, we will head southwest along the Saw Tooth Ridge toward Dragon’s Tooth, following the Appalachian Trail. At 3.3 miles we will drop off the ridge and cross route 785. We then go up over a ridge and back down to cross over route 624. From here, we slowly gain elevation until we get to the rock climb that gives access to Dragons Tooth. After taking a break and enjoying the rocks and views at Dragons Tooth, we will head back down. Going down, we will split off from the Appalachian Trail and go down the trail that leads to the Dragons Tooth parking lot on Route 311.
