Saddle Gap/A.T./Saltlog Gap Loop
Walk off a few of those holiday pounds by joining the Charlottesville Chapter of the PATC on a loop which is not found on any maps – yet. Starting on Hercules Road (near where the A.T. crosses the James River), we will climb the Saddle Gap Trail to the A.T. We will hike northbound on the Appalachian Trail to Saltlog Gap, then descend on the Saltlog Gap Trail, with occasional views of Fullers Rocks and the James River, through the Amlite Quarry, and back to our cars. Hike distance: 8 miles. Total ascent: 1800 feet. Roanoke hikers can meet at the Daleville Park-and-Ride at 9 to carpool, then meet the Charlottesville group at the Appalachian Trail parking area on U.S. 501 on the north side of the Foot Bridge over the James River around 10:30. Contact hike leader Jeff Monroe for further details. Blaze orange recommended. Strenuous.
