RAPP Hike #8 – Stiles Falls
This is the eighth hike of the RAPP (Roanoke Area Parks and Preserves) hike series, highlighting hiking opportunities near Roanoke. This hike is on a summer camp property owned by the Roanoke District of the United Methodist Church. The public is welcome to hike to the 40-foot falls except when summer camps, which start in mid-June, are in progress. So join us now while you have the chance.
The hike is roughly four miles in length. It follows gravel and dirt roads to the first of three Purgatory Creek crossings where the trail heads into the woods. I recommend you bring water-shoes and trekking poles for the creek crossings, plus a lunch, a towel and a plastic bag to stow your wet gear in when you change back into your dry shoes and socks.
The RATC recommended carpool fee is $2.00.
The weather report looks great now but obviously that could change. In this case the hike is hardly worthwhile if we can’t get some nice pictures of the falls. So if the weather report turns gloomy or rainy I will change the event to a different destination and possibly a different meeting place. If lightning and heavy downpours are likely I will reschedule the event. Please check your email for updates. Keep checking up till 7:45 a.m. the day of the event. That is the absolute latest I would make a change.
