New Trail Construction – Design & Layout

• What we’ll do
For any of you looking to brush up on or learn about new trail construction, this is for you! Our great partners at Mountain Shepherd (gracious hosts for previous ATC & RATC workshops) are putting in a new trail, and this is a great opportunity for ATC and RATC to give back AND for trailworkers/maintainers to refresh those sidehill and tread definition skills.

Work will be led by ATC staff and Konnarock Trail Crew leaders. This is day one of three; the focus of Day 1 is to discuss and learn about trail design & layout through the use of clinometers, and practicing flagging new trail at different grades. Later in the afternoon we’ll begin digging roughly 1/2 mile of trail on gentle-moderate slopes. The hike in to the project is roughly 200 yards. Tools & PPE will be provided, along with supervision and instruction.

As an added bonus, for those folks interested in volunteering several days, Mountain Shepherd has donated the use of their bunkhouse and rooms. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for those volunteers staying overnight, and dinner will be provided Friday and Saturday night for everyone helping out on the project.

Everyone is invited – this is a great way to get involved with RATC and trail maintenance.

ATC provides: tools, gloves, hardhats, safety glasses, training, dinner, breakfast & lunch for over-nighters

If interested, please RSVP here. If you have any questions, or if you’re looking to participate and you have special dietary restrictions (gluten-free/vegetarian/vegan/etc) please contact Josh Kloehn – 540-904-4391 or
