Mt. Pleasant / Cole Mtn. Figure-Eight Hike
The Skinny: Length — 11.5 miles (with shorter option available); Difficulty — Strenuous, but not overly so; Carpool — 56 miles, so let’s round to $6.00 per rider; Highlights — Spectacular views from the open ridge of Cole (aka Cold) Mountain, exceptional views from Mt. Pleasant’s two knobs.
The Fat: This is a spectacular figure-eight loop over two of the Blue Ridge’s nicest mountains and a great way to burn off those Thanksgiving calories! We will start at Hog Camp Gap, then ascend to the open ridge of Cole Mountain — “Sound of Music” re-creations welcome. We can then either hike to Cow Camp Gap Shelter, then back along the Old Hotel Trail past the old hotel site to Hog Camp Gap OR bushwhack down Cole Mountain to the old hotel site to shorten the hike.
Once back at Hog Camp Gap, we will do part two of the figure-eight up to Mt. Pleasant, catch the gorgeous views from the knobs, then circle back past Pompey Mtn. before returning to the parking area. Hikers should be in relatively good shape as we will have to move at a brisk (but not rushed) pace to complete the entire hike in the daylight allotted. If the weather is rainy, snowy, or blustery, I will likely cancel.
