John’ Creek Mountain / Kelly’s Knob

Hike distance is 6.3 miles.
We will meet up at Newport Community center, located at 434 Bluegrass Trail, Newport, Va at 09:00. First, we will drop cars at the end, rt 630 Northside rd. Come back to meet everyone else at comm center, travel to Rocky Gap, rt 601 to begin the hike. Starts as a 1/2 mile climb to the ridge of John’s Creek Mountain, follow the ridge to Kellys Knob view for a break / photo op. From there, downhill to Laurel Creek shelter for lunch. After lunch, drop down into the valley alongside Laurel Creek, through a rhododendron tunnel. Climbing back up to the crest, begin a long easy downhill through forrest, then breakout into pastures with fantastic panoramic views, cross the creek, across hwy 42, climb a small rise through pastures and forrest, ending at Sinking Creek bridge. The pace will be leisurely and terrain moderate. Great for new hikers! There are some nice views on this hike, abundant wildlife and good trail. Depending on the weather, the initial ascent may be a bit muddy. Wear good hiking shoes, bring water and lunch.
