House Mountain

8 and 11 mile options, Strenuous, 43 miles from Daleville, $3 Carpool fee.

My annual trek to House Mountain near Lexington will give you the option of doing both Little House and Big House or just one. The hike is 2 miles into a saddle between the two mountains, the site of a nineteenth century apple orchard. There is a shelter and seasonal spring in the saddle. From there, we will do out and back hikes up each mountain. Little House climbs up to a ridge trail and meanders through rhododendrons and rock canyons out to a north facing outcropping. Big House climbs steeply also up to ridge leading out past an old hunting shelter and to a primitive campsite facing Little House. On the way up, we will take the Goat Trail up to  panoramic views from a multi-tiered out cropping. We will also take a short side trail out to Table Top Rock before returning back to the saddle.
