Hiking VA Highlands Horse Trail to Comers Rock Fire Tower, Speedwell VA

*Please keep your RSVP current, update them as needed if your plans change*

The group will meet up at the Speedwell Elementary School in Speedwell, VA and drive the remaining 5 miles to the exit car drop point, the starting point is only about 3 miles from the car drop. This hike is 80 miles/1.5 hrs from Salem or 55 miles/1 hr from Christiansburg.

This will be an 8 to 9 mile event and should be considered strenuous due to length and over 2300 feet of elevation gain. Some of these trails are not blazed and may be a bit overgrown in areas so some light bushwhacking may also be necessary. We will be hiking up the VA Horse Trail beside the Little Dry Run Wilderness area, jumping onto Iron Mountain Trail and continuing upward to the platform where an old fire tower used to stand on top of Comers Rock. 360 degree views are possible from here, and then we will proceed back out by way of National Forest RD 57 to the cars. Please bring plenty of water and snacks. A carpool fee of $8 is suggested and there are no fees to access this area.

Located in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail is a 68-mile trail between Elk Garden and VA Rt. 94. It features mountainous terrain, valley views and valley crossings. The trail includes parking and primitive camping for those who trailer horses. Little Dry Run Wilderness is located on the east end of the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. Vegetation is typical hardwood community with oaks and hickories and some yellow pines on the warmer exposures. Wildlife in the area is diverse and Little Dry Run is a native trout stream. Access to the area centers along one trail, the Little Dry Run Trail (FT #341), of which about three miles is within the wilderness.

We’ll meet behind the school on the other side of the street from the gas station where Cedar Springs Rd. crosses Rt. 21
