Hike the Glenwood – Bearwallow to Boblett’s Gap

Length: 6.25 miles Difficulty:moderate Carpool:22 miles from Roanoke, $2.20 fee per rider

This hike will start at the Bearwallow Gap Parking for the Glenwood Horse Trail near Buchanan and follow the horse trail south, ending at Boblett’s Gap Overlook on the BRP. We will have good views of the valley below along the way with the leaves still off. There is a steep climb in the first mile, then it becomes more gradual the rest of the way to the overlook. The trail follows much of the old rail bed where iron ore was mined in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s by the Pulaski Iron Company.

We will stage pick-up cars at Boblett’s Gap Overlook on the way to the trail head. Bring water, snacks if you’d like, and rain gear or waterproof windbreaker. There is a chance of thunderstorms so wear quick drying clothing — no cotton and especially no bluejeans please. Parts of the trail is very rocky, so you’ll want sturdy foot gear as well.

I will be bringing my dogs on this hike, in case that information is important to anyone. If anyone is interested, we can go to Foot of the Mountain outside Buchanan afterwards for lunch.
