Hanging Rock – Craig County
About 9 miles; Strenuous; 30 miles from Roanoke; $2 car pool fee.
Beginning from a remote trail head between Barbour Creek and Shawvers Run Wilderness, this hike climb up to the ridge of Potts Mountain. The walk along the forestry road on the ridge at the top should have great fall views north toward the Peaks. We will take a side trail to Hanging Rock in Shawvers Run Wilderness to amazing 270 degree views south. we will probably do this hike as an out and back, but depending on the hikers, may return to our vehicles via the Potts Arm Trail. This is a wonderful remote gem that few ever experience.
