Garlic Mustard Pull

Garlic Mustard Challenge!

Date: April 17th, 2016

The Garlic Mustard Challenge is upon us and we need your help to remove this pesky invasive plant!

So please join the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy for a garlic mustard pull workday at Campbell Shelter! The work party will be hand pulling garlic mustard and carrying it off the Appalachian Trail.  We’ll be using gloves for garlic mustard removal, and large contractor trash bags to carry the plant off of the Trail. At the end of the work day we will be weighing all of the trash bags to see how much we have pulled!

The Garlic Mustard Challenge is a friendly competition among the 31 Trail Clubs and ATC regions. The ATC region that pulls the most garlic mustard and the club who pulls the most garlic mustard will be awarded a trophy from ATC. The total goal for the garlic mustard challenge is to pull 3,100 lbs: 100 lbs for every trail club.

Through our work we will help native plants reestablish themselves and enhance the surrounding habitat for wildlife.

Campbell Shelter is about 4 miles along the fire road from the McAfee Knob parking lot. After the hike to the shelter we will be pulling garlic mustard and dropping off the full trash bags at the fire road to be picked up after the work trip. We will have a vehicle that can shuttle people down the fire road with garlic mustard.

You should bring: comfortable hiking clothes and shoes, plenty of water, and lunch. Please bring work gloves if you have them.

Carpool info: We will leave the Orange Market parking lot in Salem at 8:00 am, and carpool over to the McAfee Knob parking lot.

Please contact Conner McBane by his cell at 540-525-6812 or email at cmcbane@appalachiantrail.org for more information. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you there!
