Burrus Tract Work Trip

Burrus Tract Invasive Plant Removal Work Hike
Date: February 25th
Please join the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club, RU Outdoors and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy for an invasive species workday at the Burrus Tract! The work party will be removing and controlling those pesky invasive plants! We’ll be using loppers, folding saws, and hand-pruners to cut out and eliminate Multifloral Rose, Japanese & Bush Honeysuckle, Oriental Bittersweet, and Autumn Olive. Part of the work trip will involve species ID so do not worry if you cannot identify these species yet.
The worksite is close to the AT-Kimberling Creek crossing, very near the intersection of VA 42 & VA 606. There is a short hike (5-10 min) from the trailhead to the project site.
Help us improve the AT! Through our work, we’ll improve the views from this special spot, help native plants reestablish themselves, and enhance the surrounding habitat for wildlife.
Bland is an A.T. community and having local support to improve this scenic area in Bland is exciting. Please show your support for the Bland community by helping to improve the A.T. at Burrus!
You should bring: sturdy work clothes and boots, plenty of water, and lunch. Please bring loppers, folding saws, and gloves if you have them. All PPE and work tools will be supplied by ATC. Please dress appropriately for the weather as well.
Carpool Info: We will leave the Orange Market at Hanging Rock at 8:30, and pick up the New River Valley folks at the Christiansburg Park and Ride (I-81 Exit 118A) at about 9:30. We will be meeting at the 42 parking lot across from Burrus around 10 am. I will not be carpooling because I will be bringing tools so please contact someone else in the Meetup to sure up carpool details.
Please contact Conner McBane by his cell at 540-525-6812 or email at cmcbane@appalachiantrail.org for more information. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you there!
