Big Butt/Forge Mtn Hike, Goshen WMA

Joint outing with the Charlottesville Chapter PATC, for experienced (and adventurous) hikers only. 14 miles. Limited to 10 hikers from each Club. Everyone starts on the waitlist for this one – you must answer a question before migrating to the list of attendees. This is some of the most remote lands you can hike on north of Roanoke. The first 6 miles is a 3000 foot ascent from the Maury River over 3 mountains to the summit of Big Butt Mountain, where a fire tower used to exist. From there, the group will follow a trail that the leaders have yet to take and which is not found on maps or in trail guides. Both leaders are experienced bushwhackers, however participants must be fit and come with a sense of adventure and accept that all may need to descend some steep slopes. This is an incredibly beautiful area that is basically empty except during hunting season. We will charge $2 per person (in addition to travel costs) for the group permit to hike in the Wildlife Management Area. (No hunting on Sundays.) Likely stop at microbrewery in Lexington on the way back, to toast to our survival with the Charlottesville Chapter.
