Strenuous, 10.1 miles with an option to include the Sulphur Spring trail for an additional mile or so.
The hike begins on FS 3093 near the James River Recreation area. We begin on the Balcony Falls trail, which climbs from 760′ to 2650′ elevation in about 4 miles. It’s a long, but gentle climb. From there we take the AT for a short distance to the Gunter Ridge trail, which will lead us to the Glenwood Horse Trail and return to our cars. There are views of the James River Gorge, its rapids, and the Arnold Valley.
Bring lunch and plenty of water. Long pants are highly recommended, as ticks are prevalent in this area.
