AT Hike – Ranger Station at Rt.16 Sugar Grove, VA to Rt.11 Groseclose, VA

This will be about an 11 mile shuttle hike on the Appalachian Trail from the Mt. Rogers Ranger Station on Rt.16 in Sugar Grove, VA to the Relax Inn Motel on Rt.11 in Groseclose, VA. The Relax Inn Motel is 85 miles from Salem, 60 miles from Christiansburg, and an $8 carpool fee is suggested. This hike should be considered strenuous due to 1800+ feet of elevation gain and the length of the hike. I would add that most of the elevation gain is in the first 5 miles of the hike, the remainder of the hike is mostly downhill. Also to note, there will be a few stream crossings an areas that tend to remain wet on this hike so a dry pair of socks isn’t a bad idea. This hike starts out by taking us across the ridgeline of Brushy Mountain and then dropping down the back side. We will then hike up and over Locust Mountain and lastly we’ll cross over Glade Mountain Road to ascend Glade Mountain. Some good vantage points for pictures of Atkins and Groseclose will be available from the top of Glade Mountain. As we descend the north slope of Glade and at around 7 miles distance we can stop at Chatfield Shelter for some snacks and a break. Vaught Branch creek runs right beside the shelter and could produce some great picture opportunities as well. As we head on down the trail we hike directly through the middle of the Settlers Museum of SW Virginia. I found of particular interest the old Lindamood schoolhouse which was built originally in 1894 and is now open to thru hikers as overnight accommodations, free of charge.

We’ll meet off Exit 54, I81 South, at the Relax Inn Motel on Rt.11. There is a $3 per car fee to leave vehicles at the motel, so I’d suggest leaving the largest vehicles at this location. We will then load up and drive just 10 more miles to the trailhead in Sugar Grove.
