Hike Description: We will drive to Sunset Field on the Blue Ridge Parkway to begin our hike. We will cross over to the east side of the BRP and descend a gated road about 1/2 mile to the site of the former Camp Kewanzee and then take the Glenwood Horse Trail (a grassy Forest Service Road) north to Reed Creek a distance of 5.2 miles. There will be views to the north and east along the way and of course ups and downs. At Reeds Creek we will turn onto an old woods road with a 2.2 mile climb to the BRP. At this point, we walk north on the BRP 2/10 mile and join up with the AT to head south over the summit of Apple Orchard Mountain. At 4,206 feet this is the highest point on the AT between Chestnut Knob near Burkes Garden to Mt. Moosilauke in New Hampshire. There are great views to the west. Enroute to the summit we will pass through The Guillotine, a large boulder stuck between two rock formations. Great photo opt here. We will be on the AT 2.3 miles with about 8/10 mile being in the Thunder Ridge Wilderness before reaching Parkers Gap Road. We then walk this road about 3/10 mile back to Sunset Field.
