Appalachian Trail: Va. 311 to US 220

Basics — Length: 19.7 miles; Difficulty: Strenuous; Carpool Fee: $1.50 per rider; What to Bring: Basic Hiking gear appropriate for the day (remember the 10 essentials), water, snacks, lunch; Highlights — McAfee’s Knob, Tinker Cliffs, Hay Rock, and several other notable viewpoints.

Detailed Description — This hike includes two of the three ‘Virginia Triple Crown’ sites. We start with a modest climb of McAfee’s Knob, descend to Campbell Shelter, and then follow the ridge. There are several nice viewpoints of Carvin’s Cove from rock outcrops. The steepest climb of the day will be up the trail-south slope of Tinker Cliffs. We’ll enjoy the view there, descend to Scorched Earth Gap and Lamberts Meadow, then follow the ridge of Tinker Mountain. The final two miles are a descent into Daleville with one final short climb to the parking area. This hike will cover RATC sections 4 & 3 for those trying to complete the 113-miler program. The hike itself is moderate, but the length makes this a strenuous to very strenuous hike. Hikers need to be in good shape to not only make the distance, but to do so in good time.

If anyone would like to go out to eat after the hike for a well-deserved meal, we can make arrangements to do that.
